Across Egypt, the Gulf and most of the Arab world, cash on delivery is still the payment method most shoppers choose. The catch is that some of those orders come back: the customer ordered by mistake, changed their mind, or never meant to receive it. Every returned parcel costs you shipping both ways, packing, time, and stock that was held without being sold.
First, measure the loss
Before changing anything, work out what returns cost you each month:
- Orders per day × refusal rate × cost of a returned parcel × 30 days
- Example: 30 orders × 20% × $2 × 30 = $360 a month
It is usually more than you think, and it is the number to compare any fix against.
1. Confirm every order before you ship it
The biggest lever is having the customer confirm before shipping. Phone calls take staff time, and many text messages go unread. The fastest option is a WhatsApp message with two buttons: Confirm order and Cancel order.
- Confirmed: the order moves to Processing and you ship with confidence.
- Cancelled: the order is cancelled and the stock returns, without a wasted shipment.
- No reply within 24 hours: usually not serious, and the order is cancelled automatically.
The Yakeen plugin for WooCommerce does this automatically from your own WhatsApp number, and the core version is free on WordPress.org.
2. Remember customers who refused before
A large share of returns comes from the same people. Someone who refused once is likely to refuse again. Record each refusal, and hide cash on delivery for new orders from that phone number; they can still order and pay online.
- Add a "Refused on delivery" order status and use it for every returned parcel.
- Recognise the customer by phone however it is typed: +20, 0 or Arabic digits.
- Keep a blacklist of numbers and emails you know are fake.
That is exactly what COD protection does in the Yakeen Business plan.
3. Get the order details right from the start
- Make the phone number required at checkout.
- Ask for a clear address: region, city, street and a landmark.
- Let customers fix their address before shipping instead of losing the parcel to a wrong address.
4. Tell the customer when the order ships
A WhatsApp message on shipping day with the amount to pay on delivery reminds and prepares the customer, and cuts "I wasn't home" and "I didn't have the cash".
Summary
- Measure your monthly loss from returns.
- Confirm every cash-on-delivery order on WhatsApp before shipping.
- Hide cash on delivery from customers who refused before.
- Collect a proper address and notify the customer on shipping day.
